Hyper

Hyper TL;DR

  • carry the Petra Shovel
  • die 3 times (once in hako)
  • /quarry near the rook
  • don't be too far ahead on the scoreboard
  • (use your Job Abilities)

What's "Hyper"?

Hyper is the name the previous ballista communities came up with for when quarrying yields the best items reliably. When you see someone using revitalizer after revitalizer, constantly popping elixirs and body boosts, they have activated hyper.

Somewhere in the coding of quarry, Square (intentionally?) added what could have been meant as a comeback mechanism. When certain conditions are met, hyper activates. However, there's no indication other than what you see in your quarries.

How to Hyper

There are only a few key boxes to tick off to trigger it:

1.  Carry the Petra Shovel
For whatever reason, this is key, and it's better to have this anyway.
2.  Die 3 times
This is straightforward, die 3 times in a game. At this point, if you have the Petra Shovel, hyper is "on". This is why some players will refuse healing early on and use extremely aggressive equipment to begin a game. They're hoping to die (after dealing as much damage as possible).  Only one death required in 15~20 min diorama games.
3.  /quarry near the rook
Not totally necessary.  Using /quarry near the rook decreases your chances of getting Petra, so you'll get more items.
4.  Don't be too far ahead on the scoreboard
If your team is ahead by a huge amount, hyper can be less reliable.   The exact score difference to hinder your hyper isn't well known, but it scales with team size.  In a 18v18, a score difference of 50 won't cause any issues, but a score difference of 50 in a 3v3 will absolutely slow down your revitalizers/boosts/elixirs/etc.
5.  Use your JAs
Having your 2H ability up will slow down revitalizer quarries.  It's thought that using your other abilities too (increasing total abilities recast time across everything you have) also helps.  Use your abilities to help the quarry help you.

Basic Strategy

The first time learning about hyper, it can be a lot to process. Most people will jump on RNG or SAM at the earliest opportunity and see how many Eagle Eye Shots they can do in one match. Fair enough. But there's a lot of extra strategy to consider.

First of all, do we want our opponents to have access to this!? Of course not. So, how do we prevent them from using it?

We can try not killing them -- but that leaves them open to quarrying for mountains of petras to score, and that's bad too. Hm.

Depending on what jobs they are, and what our team can do, we should create a strategy for each game.

We shouldn't let them have an easy time getting to hyper. Make their deaths mean something (kill them when they have 5p). Or we shouldn't let them get hyper at all. Simply never killing an opponent, while it seems counterintuitive, is sometimes a good strategy.

Commonly used strategies

Never kill the healer
They'll score lots, but they'll become more and more useless as their MP depletes.  Maybe kill them late-game and if they have many petras (but be prepared as their MP comes back after death)
healer counteracts this with refresh equipment, cheap enfeebling spells, and scoring often
Kill the (target of choice) immediately at every possible opportunity
Used often in close quarters games (1 rook officials, hako).  Never let that target take advantage of their hyper, or do anything at all, really.  Build TP in preparation for their return.  Kill on sight, never let them act.
the (target) counteracts by keeping /sprint available and making the killers' job as difficult as possible [but don't just leave the battle forever] + the (target)'s team helps them stay alive
"Starve" a dangerous DD
Choose a DD on the opponent team, often something like SAM, and never let them reach hyper.  Leave them alive, as their non-hyper damage is a fraction of what they could do if they had a pile of revitalizers.
Starved DD counters this by scoring lots of petra, and being as damaging as possible [and trying to provoke enemy WS into their own deaths if possible - SAM,PLD,etc]
